MEMS:
Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems refer to integrated, miniaturized, electrical and mechanical devices. Utilizing semiconductor-manufacturing techniques, MEMS devices (micro- actuators, microvalves, motors, gears, sensors, etc) can be made as small as a human hair for low costs. The potential for consumer applications is limitless. For example, MEMS-based sensors and actuators could be integrated into the wings of air vehicles to alter the surrounding airflow characteristics in such a way that it enhances the overall performance of air vehicles. In the medical field, MEMS technology is also utilized to fabricate micro-instruments with multiple applications (precision drug delivery control, recording and analysis of electro-physiological signals, viruses/infection detection within the bloodstream, etc.). |
